Homework Policy

In third grade, students should read for 30 minutes each night and record the books read on the weekly reading chart.  I encourage you to listen to your child read the books orally, and to check for comprehension by asking your child to describe the story Parents may read aloud to their child as well.

Each week I send home a spelling list.  Children should spend 10 minutes each night practicing these words, and you can help by giving a practice quiz.  Periodically during the year the students will be tested on the first 100 and second 100 most commonly used words in English.   Parent help is crucial in learning to spell these frequently used words.  Students should cover each word, write it, and then check it, repeating this procedure until the word is learned.

In Math, the big homework focus for 3rd graders is the multiplication tables.  Start helping your child to practice memorizing these early in the year so that he or she will know them automatically and quickly by the end of the year.
